On Wednesday, 29.6.2022, SFB 1381 hosted the event “Women in Science” at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
In a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Miriam Laufer, Coordinator of SFB 1381, Dr. Valérie Hilgers, Prof. Dr. Nora Vögtle and Prof. Dr. Annegret Wilde talked about their own personal experiences as women in academia. All three are Principal Investigators of SFB 1381 who brought various experiences to the table: they are at different career stages and thus could reflect on a variety of career experiences.
Several topics were addressed: for example, systemic discrimination, everyday discrimination, advice on how to fight discrimination in and outside of the university or obstacles as female young research group leaders. The audience of over 30 participants from various institutes of the University of Freiburg and the University Medical Center showed great interest in their experiences, asked questions and added their own experiences.
The panel discussion was followed by a networking event in which the three speakers answered individual questions. Further, this gave members of the audience the chance to reflect on what they had heard and discuss with others.
We from SFB 1381 consider the here-discussed topic a highly important one that needs to be addressed and discussed. Thank you to all contributors and participants for making this happen.
