FIP200 phosphorylation regulates the mitophagy machinery
Mitophagy, a type of autophagy, removes damaged mitochondria to maintain cellular quality. It begins with the ULK1 kinase complex engaging receptors via FIP200. A recent study by SFB 1381 PIs Claudine Kraft, Laura Gámez-Díaz and Chris Meisinger, published in the Journal of Molecular Biology, demonstrates that phosphorylation of FIP200 regulates both early and late stages of mitophagy, emphasizing the importance of this signaling pathway.
